Woah... You mean today's not sunday?

Woke up at 11am feeling damn refreshed. hadnt been waking up so late since three months ago. the feeling's damn great. took my time to brush up, lazed around the house, finally settled in front of my comp.

wanted to go for a swim, but the sky looked threatening. decided to go down to sim lim square upon justin's request. ok, shall stepped out of the house. shopped at bugis for a while, got my FiRST magazine, but in the end, because of stupid aloysius, i had to travel from bugis to adelphi where aloysius was deciding whether to get his home theatre system.

great. i got to adelphi. and den we decided to walk to marina to settle our oh-so-early dinner. aloy had to go off and justin and i came to bp plaza where his parents were settling their dinner.

i came home, had another dinner, worked on producing a score and watched The Mummy Returns on Channel i, only to be reminded that this is a Monday. huh? it's a monday????

shiok~,

About Songs...

the following were notes extracted from the conductor scores of the arrangements (by Frank Ticheli) of the two songs i'm listening to now.

Simple Gifts

This song was introduced to me when i went for a certain alumni band's concert. They were playing "Lord of the Dance" by Ronan Hardiman who adapted Simple Gifts for the tap-dance extravaganza by Michael Flatley. Later on, during the Pacific Basin Music Festival in Hawaii, i was reintroduced to this song once again by another band. Till then, i still thought that this song is called "Lord of the Dance" originally composed by Ronan Hardiman. only years later, i heard the song once again over the Oscars awards in a different arrangement and i started to get interested to find out the history behind the song, only to find that Ronan Hardiman adapted the melody selfishly and that the original tune belongs to a Shaker's melody...

The last movement to Frank Ticheli's Simple Gifts Suite is a setting of the Shaker's most famous song, "Simple Gifts," sometimes attributed to Elder Joseph Bracket (1797-1882) of the Alfred, Maine community, and also said (in Lebanon, New York, manuscript) as having been received from a Negro spirit at Canterbury, New Hampshire, making "Simple Gifts" possibly a visionary gift song. It has been used in hundreds of settings and throughout its little journey, the tune is never abandoned, rarely altered, always exalted.

The Shakers were a religious sect who splintered from a Quaker community in the mid-1700's in Manchester, England. Known then derisively as "Shaking Quakers" because of the passionate shaking that would occur during their religious services, they were viewed as radicals, and their members were sometimes harassed and even imprisoned by the English. The Shakers were pacifists who kept a very low profile, and their membership increased only modestly during the decades following their arrival, but soon after the Civil War their membership declined dramatically. Their practice of intense simplicity and celibacy accounts for much of their decline. The Shakers were known for their architecture, crafts, furniture, and perhaps most notably, their songs. Shaker songs were traditionally sung in unison without instrumental accompaniment. Singing and dancing were vital components of Shaker worship and everyday life. Over 8000 songs in some 800 songbooks were created, most of them during the 1830's to 1860's in Shaker communities throughout New England.

S I M P L E    G I F T S

'Tis the gift to be simple, 'tis the gift to be free;
'Tis the gift to come down where we ought to be;
And when we find ourselves in the place just right,
'Twill be in the valley of love and delight.

When true simplicity is gained,
To bow and to bend we shan't be ashamed
To turn, turn will be our delight,
'Til by turning, turning we come round right.

Loch Lomond

This song is introduced to me very recently by . At my first listening, it sounded like "Fields of Gold" written by Sting. Interestingly, the version of Loch Lomond that my fren introduced me to is also rearranged by Frank Ticheli, and the historical information behind this song can be found at his official publishing website www.ManhattanBeachMusic.com. i've just downloaded a version with the lyrics and it sounded very folkish and very serene.

At the time in Scottish history when "Loch Lomond" was a new song, the United Kingdom (which united Scotland, England, and Wales) had already been formed. But the Highland Scots wanted a Scottish, not an English King to rule. Led by their Bonnie Prince Charlie (Prince Charles Edward Stuart) they attempted unsuccessfully to depose Britain's King George II. An army of 7,000 Highlanders were defeated on April 16, 1746 at the famous Battle of Culloden Moor. It is this same battle that indirectly gives rise to this beautiful song. After the battle, many Scottish soldiers were imprisoned within England's Carlisle Castle, near the border of Scotland. "Loch Lomond" tells the story of two Scottish soldiers who were so imprisoned. One of them was to be executed, while the other was to be set free. According to Celtic legend if someone dies in a foreign land, his spirit will travel to his homeland by "the low road" - the route for the souls of the dead. In the song, the spirit of the dead soldier shall arrive first, while the living soldier will take the "high road" over the mountains, to arrive afterwards.

The song is from the point of view of the soldier who will be executed: When he sings, "ye'll tak' the high road and I'll tak' the low road" in effect he is saying that you will return alive, and I will return in spirit. He remembers his happy past, "By yon bonnie banks ... where me and my true love were ever wont to gae [accustomed to go]" and sadly accepts his death "the broken heart it ken nae [knows no] second Spring again."

The original folksong uses a six note scale; the seventh scale degree is absent from the melody. The lyric intertwines the sadness of the soldier's plight with images of Loch Lomond's stunning natural beauty.

L O C H    L O M O N D

By yon bonnie banks,
And by yon bonnie braes,
Where the sun shines bright, on Loch Lomond
Where me and my true love
Were ever wont to gae
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

(Chorus)
Oh! ye'll tak' the high road and
I'll tak' the low road,
An' I'll be in Scotland afore ye',
But me and my true love will never meet again
On the bonnie, bonnie banks of Loch Lomond.

'Twas then that we parted,
In yon shady glen,
On the steep, steep side of Ben Lomond
Where in purple hue
The Highland hills we view,
And the moon coming out in the gloaming.

(Chorus)

The wee birdies sing
And the wild flowers spring,
And in sunshine the waters are sleeping.
But the broken heart it kens
Nae second Spring again,
Tho' the waeful may cease frae their greeting.

(Chorus)

Some words in the Scots language:
yon ... yonder
bonnie ... beautiful
braes ... slopes (hillsides)
gae ... go
glen ... valley
ben ... mount (mountain)
gloaming ... twilight (dusk)
wee ... tiny
kens ... knows
nae ... no
waeful ... woeful
frae ... from
wont ... accustomed

Yesterday and Today

Yesterday

Morning: supposed to fall in at 9:15am, but was so unlucky that i din make it on time. firstly, my ezlink card miraculously suddenly doesnt hv any value, so i had to use coins. secondly, i had only enough coins to last me for one trip, i cant make a transfer trip, hence i had to go all the way to yishun bus interchange to top up my card. thirdly, the stupid bus i took broke down on the way. darn~ by the time i reached yishun bus interchange, it's already 8:50am. shucks~ i quickly caught a cab to rush to the camp, but still din make it in time to rush up to the white house. luckily, terence, fazil and my fellow batchmates had me covered up. thanks a lot. on the way to camp, wanted to listen to my newly bought Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkanban soundtrack, but the battery went flat. urgh~ terrible.

Afternoon: had lunch at Changi Naval Base. fabulous food again. terence is right. if food were this good in NSC, i bet at least 90% of the ppl will be indenting lunch. made terrible mistakes during the display. gosh~ was sort-of scolded by staff, but he put it in a laughing manner. anyway, there werent much ppl watching the display anyway too. i only noticed some ppl giggling away as we played Popeye, the Sailor Man, besides that, i tot the pathetically little audience found the display quite boring. After getting back to camp, decided that since my day had been so unlucky, shall stay in all the way. slept after all of my bunkmates left.

Night: woke up at 8pm, cooked some noodles, but suddenly received an urgent call. had to leave camp. came back at 11:30pm.

Today

Morning: was feeling a bit moody in the morning, but the moodiness faded away, thanks to the attack on wei jyh who's afraid of massage and tickle. muahaha~ the display went alright for me. arthur made the exact same mistake i did yesterday. roomaizan and staff maswan's eyes almost bulged out at that moment.

Afternoon: my first direct book out! (aiya, both NSC and PLC are so the quite-near-my-house)gosh~ it was terrible carrying all those stuff (shoes, instrument, clothings, scores...). went down to A.I. practice together with Ronnie, Woei Kee and Kel. Lifeng turned up and was surprised to see me. haha. and she actually forgot my name. hmm~ haha. my tone sucked today, most prob due to the morning blasting. terrible. felt so paiseh making so much pitching mistakes today.

Evening: headache set in after practice. had dinner at a sushi point in bedok wif ronnie, jamie, woei kee and kel. wasn't exactly nice, but it was ok la. headache attacked at full blast on the mrt and the bus, so was giving pissed off face at anyone who irritated me even very slightly (like some ppl trying to show i'm blocking their way wif my instrument case when i cudnt help it). reached home, had a shower, had mum massaged me, felt much better. looking forward to sleeping 24 hrs...

kinda-tired,

HQBO Duty

HQBO Duty
Headquarters Barrack Order Duty
duties include staying at the HQ BO table, staring at the telephone, answer the telephone when it rings, pass the telephone over to whoever the person on the other line wants to speak to, then, talk crap to the clerks and visitors who care and come to visit you, wear a jack to look like a clerk, stay in the camp for god knows wut, watch the best tv (of all the tvs in the other bunks) inside the BO stay-in bunk whom nobody stays in, wake up early next day hoping the next BO will come and take over soon, etc etc.

i missed the 01S21 bball session because of this stupid BO duty on 27/05. darn~ messaged zqi, zyi and my around 10, tinking they wud hv started playing, but, *ops* apparently everyone was late. poor zqi, had to wait... haha.

did the duty wif jeremy as my fellow BO and the bitchy 1SG sin as my BOS (Barrack Orderly Sergeant). overheard a lot (really a lot) of bitchings abt ppl in central band (i'm in band A fyi). quite fun to be listening to them. haha.

K S Lee din bother us much that day, dun noe why. he kept walking in and out of RSM warrant razak's office for god knows wut. the only time he pestered me was after he asked me if i had really lost my 11B (i din LOSE it, it was in my wallet which got STOLEN). den for the rest of the day, whenever he managed to get my attention, he wud go "Aiyo, Johnson Zhang!" for some reason apparently, he liked to pronounce my surname Zhang.

my frens came late in the evening before falling out time (which is 5pm) because they had to settle some WITS stuff with jeremy. i cud tell they were making an effort trying to tell me that they werent in HQ to visit me. got the point. then i spotted them bitching abt me behind my back, then i jus replied back oh-so-politely "ya ya, bitching abt me behind my back right? tink i stupid or wut? i know u all kept bitching abt me behind my back one lor..." somebody blushed oh-so-paiseh-ly... do i feel good? i juz felt i managed to do something without flaring my temper. that gave me satisfaction.

stayed in the white house (SAF band's working place) until 8pm (normally ppl wud leave by 6pm) because MDC using our lecture room and we cannot leave because the key's wif them. apparently their colonel was giving them a lashing abt the complains they received. gosh~ and he had to pull the three of us duty personnels from band to suffer wif them. gosh~ disgusting. luckily i'm not in MDC...

fantasia barrino won American Idol season three! i'm happy, really happy for her. teared wif her as she sang "I Believe" after she won, but got pissed off with kok wee and jens trying to imitate her high-pitch singing. so rude, there're still ppl supporting her in the room lor... i juz kept quiet. went back to bunk. apparently ronnie was very happy abt the result too. kept quiet further.

today was a library day, stayed in the librarian browsing thru cds (and asking staff ridzwan to allow me to borrow 10 cds!!) and photocopied a lot of personal scores. so shiok!

booked out at 3:45pm. so fun booking out alone. met yanhui and aloysius and yongxiang and we went to watch The Day After Tomorrow. went HMV hoping that the soundtrack to Harry Potter and the Prisoner for Azkaban is out, and my wish came true! bought it right away.

how i found TDAT? read my prev blog.

ripping 9 cds into my comp now while i blog and chat wif muying. ;)

satisfied,
Johnzzon

"The Day After Tomorrow" Review

juz came back from watching The Day After Tomorrow with Aloy, Justin and Yongxiang. i must say, it's one of those films that i really misjudged. i never really wanted to watch this movie, coz i had been receiving bad critics review on its script. the previous movie i misjudged was Sleepy Hollow which is directed by Tim Burton and starred Johnny Depp.

catastrophic movies like TDAT survived a box office success normally due to the alluring special effects in the film. besides that, the story plot usually wud be cliche plots that u can really expect. I hated watching Deep Impact, The Core because of this reason. and it was the same reason i din really wanna watch TDAT, especially critics commented the script was badly written and does not allow the actors to express their emotions well.

boy, was i wrong.

the plot was well based. the primary plot evolved around a family of three, a father, a mother and a teenage son. teenage son was trapped in new york during his school trip there to take part in a geek competition. father was guilty that he din spend enough time wif his son, so after he made a promise to rescue him, he went all out to save his son despite the worsening climate in the northern hemisphere, ie the whole upper part of american. damn it, i sound stupid trying to make this particular plot interesting. but hey, this primary plot became an essential part of linking three different parts of the movie together, allowing the pacing of the movie to move fluently and homogenously (unlike Deep Impact).

the effects were spectacular. it was breath-taking and disturbing to see the places being destroyed by the various weather phenomenons. tho u can tell which scenes were computer generated, u can't help but be fascinated by the beauty and the scariness of the images at the same time. events kept happening thru-out the show, but they tried to explain them quite convincingly and being the geographical and scientific me, i really give them the thumbs-up for having me believe them (unlike The Core).

basically i've watched most of the movies for the month of MAY, and if i were to rank them, below is my list.

Movie Ranking for the month
1) Shrek 2
2) The Day After Tomorrow
3) Van Helsing
4) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (i have yet to watch)
5) Troy

enjoyed-another-good-movie,

You

When you laugh, do u really mean you're being happy? or r you just trying to hide the fact that you're sad? so wut if you're sad? people don't need to care about you, do you know that? of coz you do. but you're afraid of ppl assuming. 1 + 1 does not equals to two. sure, you're frightened. you're frightened of the fact that ppl misjudge you incorrectly. you're frightened of the fact that ppl will talk abt bad moments abt you even if u do not mean it. you're frightened of the fact that you're simply not judged as the person you r.

wut happened to those moments when you simply laugh because of the joy in your heart, in your soul, in your mind? wut happened to those days when you don't hav to tink abt wut u say becoz you trust your frens to know who u really r? are all your frens now merely just acquaintances? when hv u become so emotional over matters? why does a single song of the pass haunt you so much that you can tear so easily? how can the attitudes of a few ppl towards you cause your mood to change within a few seconds? why r u so affected by ppl around u?

you feel like your whole life is in a mess now. some ppl know your secrets, some ppl don't. you don't trust those who know those who know your secrets. you don't hav to bring it up now and den, but sometimes you just have to coz you don't feel secure, do you? you had to resort to means and methods. you kept telling other ppl intricate and unnecessary details of your life, hoping they wud know tink they know who you r and not find out further. yet, becoz of this, u tink ppl find you talkative and noisy. but, you can only ask yourself, is this merely my own assumption or is it true?

you wan to get into a relationship. you hav a target. wut's stopping u? the mere excuse of not having the correct timing is losing its power. when r u jus gonna go ahead and speak your mind? or is it because you are afraid of something yet again? r u afraid you're jus making use of the gal to forget the other stuff in your life? r u afraid that you're not really in love wif the gal?

why r u so afraid? why? u were never like this before. u were once that guy that heck care whatever advices ppl gave u. u were once that guy that speaks his mind freely and makes lame jokes for no reason wutsoever. u were once that guy that dares to do wutever plans he has.

"believe who u r" is always the advice ppl give u. do you know who u r in the first place? u did. do u?

posing-questions,
Johnzzon
