27th May 2005

wa, it was a terrible day of travelling & meeting ppl & travelling & meeting other ppl. haha~

~ // ~

woke up at arnd 12pm, but lazed around until 1pm before i stepped out of my room. decided to go bukit panjang plaza to have lunch. *sob* mum's not in town, so there's no one to cook lunch for me. :(

took a bus down to orchard cos i need to get keith lee's present, and to go kino to buy the book (using my sis' membership card. got 20% wor!). almost did not manage to find the book, and got glared at by a group of stupid students went i tried to reach out to the book i wanted which was blocked by them sitting in front of the book shelf. when i walked away, i overheard them saying "wa, that guy very weird lor~". sheesh, that's what i got from being courteous and politeful. "you shd hav shouted 'EXCUSE ME' lor," my sis said later.

ya, anyway, sis asked me to get for her a comic book and suggested i meet her up since she's in town too. so, i bought the stuff and headed towards far east where she's setting up the display for her stuff at Pandora's Box. den i continued looking around for the present for keith lee.

managed to get a cute little fridge (which was in fact a radio and a clock) for him. we went down to my sis' former workplace, raffles' city's MPH, where i lazed around and looked for interesting books to add to my future book shopping list. before i left, i was informed that i wud get a free adidas watch for buying a new and weird magazine called *check again* Asialink. haha, and the mag is only $7.80! "u can throw away the magazine after that la" my sis' fren suggested, "and i got myself four!" haha, so tempted i was that i got one. *bleahz*

Hobart Centennial

nice march, was noticing how james barnes was using different section to protray the same trio theme which was repeated for at least 4 times. nice~

Festive Music for Singapore

somebody had to tell me this song sucked big time before the concert. and i had a bad impression of it. i saw the conductor score before and it was quite a weird and messy song. but in the end it turned out to be very much enjoyable! the contrasting sections playing the main melody (which was a very simple minimalistic tune) and the accompaniment (consisting of punctuated rhythms and varying accents) made the whole piece sound very pictorial. and when the bluesy part came in, i was thrown into a very big fantasy-like place which i often experienced listening to pieces like Rhapsody in Blue. it was, tho not perfect, quite fantastic and very unlike any piece James Barnes had composed.

Poetic Intermezzo

my first time listening to this piece. sounded like his another work called Romanza. very fluid, very flowing. and Zhongqin's solo was very nicely done.

Fantasy Variations

when i get news that any band is going to try this piece, i wud always go like "riight". it is, to me, a very technical piece and often will bore ppl out halfway thru the piece. interestingly, this time round, it didn't.

the first one-third of the piece (before the slow-theme) was portrayed in a very operatic comedy style (tink something like a Shakespeare's comedy, not comedies like "Dude, Where's My Car?!"). i especially liked the exaggerated solo by the contra-bassoon set against the muted trombones.

the slow section, oh boy, this is the start of the downfall of the whole concert. Victor Soh's stupid footsteps down the platform, overpowering horn soli, squeaking clarinets. damn it, i cudn't even concentrate on listening to the song anymore (i was giggling all the way).

last part. the percussion section was in a mess and i totally cudn't hear much of the band. the song ended in a style contrasting to how they started the piece, a comedic tragedy.

Alvamar Overture

my highlight for the night. i waited all the way from the beginning of the concert to listen to this song. and... damn it, they HAVE to destroy it. firstly, it was messy, most probably due to the fact that everyone has heard different tempos of this piece and everyone is doing their own interpretation. the slow part, was not melodic and lyrical enough, and the woodwind sections was overpowering most of the lower brass melodic lines with their holding notes. (hello, nobody really cares if u can hold your notes that long u know. this is no American Idol finals.) and, damn, the third part has to start off which Victor Soh TOTALLY cocking up the snare drum part which STARTS off the whole momentum of the last section. and in the end, the last allegro section was of no energy and no excitement. there was no climax and no thrill in listening to them play the intersecting allegro and slow themes. terrible. the WORST rendition of Alvamar Overture i ever heard.

and with that, i left the VCH to rush down to Keith Lee's place to celebrate his 21st birthday.

by the time i reached, i was so tired and groggy (my nose was running all the time) and i had to jus sit there and listen to my 4L's ppl socializing with one another. the only happy thing was edmund mentioning my complexion has improved dramatically. (WOAH~!)

didnt manage to go to 01S21's outings. by the time i reached home, i was so damn dizzy and tired that after i took my medicine, i wandered off into my own dreamworld.

*i-pity-alvamar-overture*,
